This morning the kids and I were given a 4 pack of tickets to visit Upper Darby’s Summer Stage for the very first time. We saw Freckleface Strawberry, the Musical, based on a book by Julianne Moore, a red head herself. Freckleface Strawberry is a sweet story of a little girl who is bullied because of her red hair and freckles. Throughout the story she learns valuable lessons on being true to yourself, and loving yourself the way you were made. Her friends learn how words matter. The show is perfect for kids ages 4 and up and is a manageable length (70 minutes) even for younger ages if you want to bring the smaller ones.
I loved the story line. It was a great reminder to children and adults alike that the careless things we say have power to hurt others. One of the things that stood out to me was that Strawberry, while others’ words hurt her, used her words unkindly also. I would have loved if she chose better words as she knew what it was like to be picked on and teased. I find that it is very easy to feel when others offend us and not see where we offend also and I felt that was a great life lesson to remember.
One of my kids has freckles and he hates them. He said that this story was helpful in him seeing his freckles a little differently. We were able to have a conversation about how kind his friends are in not making fun of his freckles and how it must feel when others do. It was so encouraging for him to see as Strawberry came to terms with learning that we each are different in our own way and that is okay.
We want to give a special shout-out to 2 people we recognized in the Upper Darby Summer Stage as kids that also have been in our home school co-op – Ben and Ross. You guys did a great job and it was so good for my kids to see that the world is wide open when it comes to opportunities to experience life.

This looks like such a cute play! It’s great when you find local places doing such awesome people!
It was so good.
I love the premise of this musical. I’ve heard of the book and immediately loved that the main character was a red-head with freckles, and had a lesson to learn in self-acceptance. It’s such a great lesson for kids to learn early. It’s so nice to see that you all enjoyed the show.
This looks like SO much fun! We went one time to see Cinderella at the Bucks County Playhouse and my kids loved it. I will have to check this one out too!
E and I saw Frog and Toad several years ago. It was so cute. Then my aunt was in a Rapunzel type one last year and we saw that. I love plays. I bet Cinderella was a good one.
I have heard so many wonderful things about this program from my friend who is helping put it all together. She loves the kids and it is the highlight of her summer to participate in this wonderful program.
