Moving is a daunting and expensive process. Here are 7 ways to save money on food when moving your house and family.

Moving can be overwhelming and often is a time when you need to stretch your budget even more. With packing boxes, cleaning dust bunnies, and trying to deal with the emotional toll moving takes, who has time to cook?

As we look at prepping for a move, here are 7 real ways I am going to save money on food and cook it myself with less stress.

  • Batch Cooking – My friend Alea Milham over at Premeditated Leftovers is the author of this brand new cookbook that I am turning to for deliciously easy batch cooking recipes – Prep-Ahead Meals From Scratch: Quick & Easy Batch Cooking Techniques and Recipes That Save You Time and Money {affiliate link}.
  • Freezer Cooking – Scroll below to find some of my recipes that I am batch cooking to freeze for easy dinners in the next couple months.
  • Discount Gift Cards – I will be watching for deals at the grocery store or online for discounted restaurant gift cards. I KNOW there are times we will end up eating out and if I can do so a little cheaper, those pennies will add up.
  • Buy in Bulk – I’m planning how much shelf staples I need to get through XX amount of weeks then buying in bulk. Bulk buying means lower prices AND less time spent shopping. Double win!
  • 2 Meals in 1 – I am making some meals that I can cook a big batch then turn leftovers into a simple second meal – like beef stew can be turned into shepherd’s pie or chicken soup into chicken pie.
  • Frozen Fruit and Vegetables – I am a huge fan of fresh produce, but when I am prepping for a move I don’t have as much time to grocery shop. Frozen produce is flash frozen to preserve nutrition and quality so I can still feel confident I am feeding my family well even if we use more frozen produce than fresh for a while. Again, I can use bulk buying to save time and money here.
  • Pack a Lunch – Running errands, especially moving errands, can be long and run into mealtime. Plan for the possibility and pack a salad or sandwiches and veggies to eat on the go. Taking a few minutes to prep sandwiches, wraps, and/or salads ahead of time for moving day can also save quite a bit of money.
