To be quite honest I don’t have a whole lot of time to read these days. However, when the name Lisa Wingate came across my review list I knew I would make time for this one. I recognized the name from another book I had read and enjoyed. I may have been up reading until 3 AM but I made time for Wildwood Creek by Lisa Wingate.
Wildwood Creek isn’t a traditional romance or suspense novel. Switching between today and the past, Allie Kirkland starts out with her dream job as production assistant. Only not all is as it seems. Cloaked in mystery, the newest show she is hired on to has a mystery producer , a mystery location, and a mysterious plot set in a town that has long been abandoned and shrouded in yet more mystery.
Thrown into a new role, Allie takes on a character who is little known, yet she feels, is misunderstood. Every few chapters we are dragged back in time to this character’s life, where we are pulled into the horrors of what pioneer life could mean and the devastating effects it had on its victims.
Lisa Wingate gives just enough in the backward looking chapters to keep you hanging and reading, eagerly, for more. By the end the “mystery” is all wrapped up but Lisa leaves you guessing all the way to the end. The only thing that left me a little puzzled was that there wasn’t more mention of God. For a Christian book it seemed kind of like an after thought added near the end. I understood the main character wasn’t really “into” God once we got to the end but would have loved to see that made a little more prominent throughout the book.
I give Wildwood Creek by Lisa Wingate 4 stars and it gets my stamp of approval for “worth your money”.
