Our family loves watermelon, but my watermelon didn’t grow so I buy it at the store. Watermelon is good at any meal of the day, but this watermelon recipe is one of my favorite ways to start the day.
I was just a kid, but as a child in a family of gardeners, I knew that if I planted a watermelon seed it would grow. It would grow into this crazy big plant and watermelons would pop up off it and I would be so proud of my beautiful watermelons.
But here’s the thing, I wasn’t allowed to plant a watermelon because they do take up so much space and in a large family, garden space is prime real estate.
Imagine my excitement when a watermelon seed in the compost pile GREW. That plant grew into a big sprawling watermelon plant and I claimed it as my own. I waited all summer but no watermelon grew on it, and I always remembered that. I never tried to grow a watermelon again.
In hindsight, as an adult, I realize that I would likely have gotten better results if I had actually planted several watermelon seeds in a good growing environment, but that memory always stuck with me – my watermelon didn’t grow.
For now I am in a place that doesn’t have a good growing environment for watermelons, but someday I will have that plot of earth, and one spot of my prime real estate will be designated just for watermelons, because I need to prove to my childhood self that I can indeed grow watermelons that can be turned into the best watermelon recipes on the planet.
For just a few more years I will keep buying my watermelons at the store and make yummy watermelon recipes from them, like this tasty and gorgeous watermelon smoothie.
Watermelon smoothies are super simple and require only 2 ingredients. Not only do they offer a perfect way to hydrate kids, but they also look fancy for Sunday brunch.
