We don’t get out on dates very often so we definitely make sure we have a really nice date on or around Valentine’s Day. Oftentimes we drop the kids off at my sister’s and come home to make a nice dinner – peaceful, quiet, and cheaper. We treat the kids to something special earlier in the day or a day or 2 before. This year I made tinted pasta for their pre-Valentine’s dinner. A favorite meal in our house is past with homemade cheese sauce and broccoli, nothing fancy.
A little earlier in the day I had blanched blackberries for another recipe and had a nice deep purple water sitting there in my pasta pot, begging not to be wasted. I brought it to a boil, dumped the pasta in, and cooked as usual, al dente thank you very much. The pasta didn’t come out as brightly colored as it would have with food dye but I try to stay away from those, saving them for super special cakes. The kids didn’t care. They loved the pasta, tinted just for them. You can do the same. Put blackberries in boiling water. Bring back to a boil for 2 minutes and strain the berries out. They are great in this blackberry pie pop recipe.

My 8 year old son told his teacher our special family tradition is to eat chocolate. That was news to me.
