I hear again and again that healthy food costs too much money. I won’t naively say it doesn’t tend to cost more but I will also say I think you can be a healthy foodie and still be frugal. It isn’t always as EASY and sometimes you have to trade value. You may “pay” in time but healthy frugal food is definitely possible.
How can you be a healthy frugal foodie?
- Stock up! Stock up! Stock up! When it’s on sale, stock and save.
- Go a little out of your way but watch you don’t pay the difference in gas.
- Buy in bulk. Generally the larger the bag/quantity the cheaper it is.
- Preservation – freeze it, can it, dehydrate it. There are great resources all over the internet. Double check that they are reputable. Email me for more info. if you want.
- Check out a co-op or CSA around you. Split it with a friend if need be.
- See if there is a food auction near you.
- Start a garden – even a few vegetable or herb plants can be helpful. As long as you have a little outdoor space you can do it. A nice sunny window inside is perfect for herbs.
- Buy local in season produce as much as possible. Prices are usually lower.
- Check the sales flyers for a deal. Try something new if it’s on sale. You might love it.
Some healthy foodie thoughts:
- A banana is cheaper than a small bag of chips. It also packs a much more nutritious punch AND fills you better.
- 2 pounds of brown rice is cheaper than an average bag of chips.
- A large container of yogurt is around the same price as a box of sugary cereal.
- 1 pound of lunch meat is often no cheaper than fresh meat.
