Continuing our series on winter preservation, today we are making slow cooker applesauce. Some of my favorite recipes are simple. Slow cooker applesauce is one of my favorites because anyone can do it. Well, any one with a crock pot. You need 2 ingredients. Yeah, two, and you can make your own no sugar added, yummy applesauce with little hassle and delicious results. I love making my own applesauce. I don’t need to worry about what’s in it. I pick the apples I want. I add what I want, which incidentally is NOTHING. I make how much I want.  You don’t even need to know how to cook to make this applesauce, although you do need to know how to turn your crock pot on and you do need to know how to cut apples.

  • 6-9 pounds apples – preferably a tart apple – granny smith, ginger gold, smokehouse, rambo, jonagold, Ida’s – all good
  • Peel, core and quarter apples. Put in a 6 quart slow cooker. You can also do less in a smaller slow cooker.
  • Add 1 cup of water (1/2 for smaller batches or for apples such as Red Delicious).
  • Cook on HIGH until soft. I cooked them for around 4 hours.
  • Put in a blender, food mill or food processor until smooth.
  • If you use a food mill you can skip peeling them. The food mill will do that for you.
  • I package it into use-able amounts in freezer bags and freeze it for eating or baking. If you eat pork, it is especially yummy slow cooked with chops, garlic, ginger and cinnamon.

*Applesauce is a great substitute for oil. It does change the consistency of baked goods to be more cake-like though.

    1. It is SO much tastier. I think it’s because you pick out the apples you want (GOOD ONES) and add a little bit of love when you make it yourself. It doesn’t get watered down or mass produced.

  1. It is an odd coincidence to read this at this time. One of my best friends called and told me she made homemade applesauce yesterday and I was so impressed. I cannot wait until I try this and give her the same phone call.
