I love honey, oh let me count the ways. I shared several facts about my love of honey on Facebook the other day. (Link at bottom of post.) I love honey, and I love those pesky little dandelions out in the yard because they help provide food for the bees that give us honey.

If you have been following the tale of honey and bees the last few years you know it is filled with controversy – honey from China that’s suspect, honeybees dying in droves from… well, they just can’t agree – it’s pesticides, it’s not pesticides, it’s GMO crops, it’s not GMO crops. This one is a riddle to me. Pesticides that are only harmful to “bad” bugs. Hmm. Interesting. I need to research how that one could be possible. According to one major beekeeper in our area, bees don’t do well near GMO corn crops. Coincidence? You decide.
But no matter what, the fact of the matter is that if we don’t have our beloved honeybee we don’t have many of our crops. The facts are important enough to repeat, but I’ll refer you back to this post where I share how YOU can make a difference and help save the bees. You can also find details for a fun family event happening at Whole Foods on April 18, 2015.
Can you imagine a world without almonds, a world with less fruits and vegetables? A world without honey? Welcome to a world without bees, because honey, you can’t make pretend honey. It just isn’t going to work. And I would miss my favorite foods that are made with honey.
My Favorite Ways to Enjoy Honey
Matza with butter and honey – That decadently sweet and thick honey drips down my fingers, reminding me of the song lyrics ” the land that’s flowing with milk and honey, ’cause we’re going to the Promised Land”. If you know what I mean sing it with me. Otherwise, you’re out of luck because I can’t find the exact song.
Blueberry Honey Lemonade – Sweet sweet summertime in a glass or a perfect antidote for sore throats and spring colds, this blueberry honey lemonade is THE way to get that “shot of honey and lemon” down a kid’s throat with ease. I’ll take a pitcher please.
Honey Vanilla Cardamom Milk – Oh bedtime looks much sweeter with a warm cup of steamed milk that has just a touch of honey, vanilla, and cardamom. Sweet dreams!
Homemade Cherry Vanilla Granola – this family staple would just not be the same if we didn’t have ooey gooey honey to add flavor and texture.
Spoonful of honey – I love honey straight up. Best way to savor the flavor!

I never use honey, but this certainly makes me want too! Yum!

Thank you so much for this! We just started using local honey every day and I need ways to hide it from my kids, LOL!

LOL. You can still tell it’s honey but yummier. You could also start by mixing half sugar/half honey and wean them into it.

Bees are so important! I love honey. Lately I have been finding dead bees on my patio – we have a navel orange tree that they have been visiting very busily. But finding the dead ones worries me. Is one of my neighbors spraying them? Why would they do that? Or maybe, like you said, it’s supposed to only be killing the “bad bugs”. It doesn’t really make sense does it? Thanks for the very informative post!
Heather says
You are so right. It makes zero sense to me. I hope you can figure out what is killing the bees where you live. I know they just get sick sometimes so maybe it is a natural disease. Thank you for stopping by.
