For some reason my children have taken to trying to cram food down my throat. Maybe it’s because, while I make sure they are fed I often forget to eat. No, I have no eating disorders. More like a time disorder – not enough time in the day to do it all. The other day my son(7) brought me a…..um….concoction…..that’s the best way I can describe it. He called it a smoother.
I was even more skeptical as he explained how he MADE this smoother.
Glop plain yogurt into a glass (1/3 full)
Add a strawberry, a few blackberries, and 1 maraschino cherry.
Pour in milk to thin it a bit (about 1/3 glass)
Squirt in a (un) healthy dose of chocolate syrup, yes, it’s the HFCS laden brand I am trying to finish up before making my own.
Stir and Serve.
Imagine my shock when it actually did taste good…..a lot better than it looked considering my uncoordinated 7 year old made it.
He then proceeded to make “smoothers’ for everyone. He skipped the berries for R (5), opting to add a little orange juice instead of milk and plans to add banana slices to hers next time. He then popped them in the freezer for 2 hours. The end result was a nice slushy yogurt drink for lunch.
Sometimes it isn’t such a bad idea to let your kids loose in the kitchen. Just hide the knives and all other sharp objects.
Today I am join Look What Mom Found…and Dad Too for Kids in the Kitchen.

I don’t think I would have had the courage to taste it, but it’s SO SWEET that he made you a ‘smoother!’

As hard as it is for us to watch (or stomach..haha) kids just need to get creative sometimes. Letting them run amok in the kitchen a little gives them good practice for when they’re older. 🙂
Heather says
Yup. Get them ready to serve US breakfast in bed as teenagers. 😉

You are one brave mama! I should let my kids experiment some too!
Heather says
I recommend setting some boundaries. Maybe give them certain ingredients they can choose from – not necessarily perfect combination ingredients but ones that can’t do TOO much harm. Kids tend to think “will this taste good together” so I think that helps their concoctions.
Sarah says
Ohhhh I want to try this with my kids!!!!

That’s awesome! I’m always amazed too at how tasty my daughter’s smoothies turn out. She keeps adding more and more stuff (in a very zen way) until it’s just perfect. These young ones are pretty intuitive!
Heather says
It is amazing. I will say some got it and some don’t though!
Melinda@LookWhatMomFound...andDadtoo says
that doesn’t sound terrible at all 🙂
thanks for linking up to #kidsinthekitchen this week.

LOL, I love this photo! It really shows an uninhibited kiddo in the kitchen (or possibly me…)
Heather says
Yes! I figured all my kid in the kitchen posts are going to have authentic imperfect photos. That’s the beauty in it. 🙂
