I stopped into Ithan Market in Villanova, PA to use up a Living Social Deal that was about to expire. Through some conversation I ended up walking out with lunch from my deal and Ithan Market’s Chicken Pot Pie for the purpose of this review. However, free doesn’t mean I’m going to lie to you. No way would I want you to go buy a product I recommend and have it not be what I make it appear to be.
Ithan Market has been making chicken pot pie for years but just recently branched out into marketing it commercially. With this new marketing they are required to have it made in a USDA Kitchen. Generally this takes a little of the home cooked goodness out of a recipe. Not so with Ithan Market’s Chicken Pot Pie. It still has that “down home mama cooked a nice hot dinner” taste to it.
Now, before we go any farther let’s get one thing clear. This is Pennsylvania and in Pennsylvania we take our chicken potpie seriously. In fact, it’s debatable what form of chicken potpie is true chicken potpie. For the sake of today’s review Ithan Market Chicken Pot Pie is the type that has chicken and vegetables put in a casserole pan, covered with a crust, and baked.
I was a skeptic. After all, no one makes chicken pot pie like my mom. Growing up with Mennonite and Amish influence and recipes, we know how to make pot pie – BOTH ways in case you are wondering. For a company to claim they have a chicken pot pie worthy of my money, it is going to have to be for real and taste like home cooking, even after being frozen.
I have to say Ithan Market Chicken Pot Pie is amazing. It really tastes like homemade chicken pot pie. Here is what I think is a winning combination. Not only is this recipe tried and true, they go to the kitchen when it is being made. They watch over the whole process, from the selection of meat and produce to the process of making it, to tasting the end results before putting their stamp of approval on it.
The other reason it tastes so good is that they use minimally processed products with no artificial ingredients. They haven’t dumbed down their recipe to make it low fat or low carb. They use whole milk from Merry Mead in their filling rather than chicken broth and lard in their crust. Is it a meal you want to eat every night? Well, taste wise it sure is. However, as I know some of you are thinking….whole milk….lard…I think it is a perfect meal to have in moderation. We all make choices to eat things that aren’t great for us sometimes and instead of grabbing fast food this is a perfect (and healthier) meal to have when life is a little crazy. All you have to do is pop dinner in the oven and you have a good wholesome comfort food kind of meal just under an hour.
Ithan Market‘s Chicken Pot Pie delivers with chicken that looks like chicken, bright colored vegetables, a creamy sauce and a perfectly flaky and flavorful crust. They are located at 613 Conestoga Road, Radnor PA. You can also pick it up at Merry Mead Farm and it will hopefully be coming to store freezers near you very soon. Go pick a meal up for your next “easy make dinner”.

What about your momma’s recipe? 😀
I’m afraid I don’t have one! Also, though, there’s argument about what legit pot pie really is, so what type are you looking for?
The Pot Pie, looks yummy!!
