May is American Stroke Awareness Month. Did you know that 795,000 Americans suffer from a stroke every year? Did you know strokes are the fourth leading cause of death and the leading preventable cause of disability in the United States? According to the American Heart and Stroke Associations, research shows that one way you can help protect yourself from a stroke is by eating a brain healthy diet.

Brain Healthy Foods Help Reduce Stroke Risk May American Stroke Awareness Month

Brain Healthy Foods

  • Fruits
  • Vegetables
  • Fish (Salmon, albacore tuna, mackerel, herring or trout are all rich in omega 3 fatty acids.)
  • Whole-grain, high-fiber foods
  • Dairy ( fat-free and low-fat)
  • Lean meats

Brain Healthy Meal Ideas

  • Boneless Skinless Chicken, slow cooked in fresh tomatoes, onions, and garlic
  • Lemon Garlic Chicken
  • Grilled Salmon and asparagus that has a small amount of kosher salt, pepper and fresh squeezed lemon
  • 19 Summer Salads – Choose low-fat cheeses and meats , or use in moderation
  • Burgers and Meatloaf – Choose ground meats such as turkey or chicken but make sure they are lean – 93% or 95% lean are best.
  • Throw fresh vegetables on the grill or steam in a sauté pan with just a little water.

Foods to Avoid

Stroke Warning Signs

F – Face Drooping – Does one side of the face droop or is it numb? Ask the person to smile.
A – Arm Weakness – Is one arm weak or numb? Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward?
S – Speech Difficulty – Is speech slurred? Are they unable to speak, or are they hard to understand? Ask the person to repeat a simple sentence like: “The sky is blue.” Is the sentence repeated correctly?
T- Time to call 9-1-1 – If the person shows any of these symptoms, even if the symptoms go away, call 9-1-1 and get them to the hospital immediately.

Choosing brain healthy foods can’t guarantee you will never have a stroke but it does guarantee that you are doing your part to stay healthy and doing what you can to prevent one.
