Last weekend I invited some friends and family members over for a girls’ night out. Fall is so busy with school, sports, and kids’ activities in full swing so I wanted to host a party that helped women connect and feel like they accomplished something for the week ahead all at the same time.

I’ve been wanting to host a meal prepping party for a while so when Kitchen IQ contacted me about trying out their Edge Grip knife sharpener, the Better Zester, and the Potato Tool, I decided it was the perfect time. Let me share a little bit about these products then I will share my tips for hosting a successful meal prepping party.

The Edge Grip Sharpener is easy to use and features 2 sharpeners in one – coarse and fine (see below). It has been designed in the USA by Smith’s Consumer Products, Inc. the Edge Experts and best part is that it’s super simple to use so you don’t need to worry about destroying your blade when you sharpen it. It is also designed to sit nicely on the table or counter top without slipping around. I already owned one of these and love it! It is so easy to use that it is no wonder it’s a best-seller on Amazon. I gave this one to a guest.

  • The coarse sharpening slot has carbide blades that sharpen dull or damaged knives with just a few strokes.
  • The fine slot features ceramic rods that are perfect for finishing and polishing the edge, and for light touch-ups on a knife that is already sharp.

The Better Zester is the handiest zester I have ever owned. My guests were excited to each take one home. It comes with a sturdy cover and the best feature of all is the container that attaches to the underside. It makes zesting a breeze with its ‘catch-all’ feature and built-in measurements. It is designed especially for all citruses but I used mine to make mashed garlic this time. Perfect for the mashed potatoes that top Shepherd’s Pie. Once you’re done, it’s easy clean up with its non-stick coating.

I wanted to love the Potato Tool as did my guests. How handy is it to have a peeler, scrub brush, and knife all-in-one? Several of us just couldn’t get use to it in comparison to peelers we already have with the bulkier handle and way the blade worked for peeling, but the scrubbing feature and the stainless steel coated paring knife that stores in the handle are awesome. I will definitely use it again for those 2 features.

9 Tips for a Successful Meal Prepping Party

  • Make meals that are low allergen. I kept these meals easy to change up and also avoided gluten, soy, dairy, and nuts.
  • Make meals that use similar ingredients for easy prepping. We made a Turkey Veggie Soup and ‘All In Shepherd’s Pie’. ‘All In Shepherd’s Pie’ goes beyond the traditional minimalist shepherd’s pie with loads of veggies added.
  • Have every one bring an ingredient and buy the meat. You can always have everyone pitch in a few $$ for the meat, but having one bring 5 pounds of carrots or 3 pounds of onions is cost effective and efficient for everyone.
  • Have everyone bring baking dishes or containers to take food home, or buy throwaway pans.
  • Make sure you have enough utensils, cutting boards, and bowls. I was sent the Kitchen IQ Edge Grip knife sharpener, the Better Zester, and the Potato Tool to test with my guests.
  • Provide some light appetizers or dessert. Keep it simple! We’re all busy and sometimes less is more. We had chocolate chip cookies and wine.
  • Create recipe cards with directions for everyone to take home. I forgot to make mine up and they would have been so helpful.
  • If you are doing any cooking, make sure you have people come prepared with hot pads and a way to transport. We pre-cooked the Shepherd’s Pie then topped it with mashed potatoes so it just needed a quick bake in the oven, but that meant guests had to be prepared to transport a hot dish.
  • Have fun! There’s nothing like having a night out with the girls and then going home with meals for the week. My Monday felt pretty spectacular since all I had to do was dump soup in the slow cooker and “just add water”.

Meals to Make

I chose to make All In Shepherd’s Pie and Turkey Veggie Soup as they are easily adaptable. People could choose to leave out the meat, add sweet potatoes instead of white potatoes, skip cabbage, etc.

I added very little liquid to the soup, opting to mix in canned tomatoes to start incorporating the flavor but skipping the rest of the liquid. This made the soup easier to transport in large Ziploc bags with no mess and allowed people to choose whether they added stock, water, or another preferred liquid to the soup.

    1. I can see renting a commercial kitchen if you are hosting it for a wide variety of people or people you don’t know. I would definitely charge a fee on that or selling tickets/spots!!
