My oldest is really starting to love cooking. It is amazing what meal ideas kids can come up with when you let them imagine and try new things. A great place to start is with easy kids’ recipes. It isn’t always easy to let go and let them create, but part of kids learning to cook is letting them try something new and see for themselves whether it works or not. As they are creating have them taste and re-taste. Have them stop and think about how the flavors work together in their mouth. My son went unorthodox with this Chicken Sriracha Sandwich with chopped veggies.
I had to bite my tongue not to say “diced carrots don’t go on sandwiches”. What am I? Crazy? I love cooking without a box so why would I box my kids in? The earlier they can experiment with food the more likely they are to develop an instinct for what works and doesn’t work. It is also a great way to instill an enjoyment for cooking, a skill that will be much appreciated in the future. He also applied sriracha sauce very liberally. I did warn him it would be hot as I didn’t want him to burn his mouth too badly but both boys LOVED it.
