Welcome to another edition of kids cooking. Today we are spotlighting an easy homemade recipe from kid chef K. Who knew you could make oatmeal in the rice cooker?
Set it and forget it! It’s time to make apple oatmeal in the rice cooker. Chef K has been experimenting with several apple and oats combinations and his very discerning (aka thoughtful and picky) palate have just not been quite happy.
Today he ran out of supervised kitchen time so we tried something new – making it in the rice cooker. If you are a fan of oats that have been totally broken down and have a creamy texture, then this recipe is most definitely for you. The apples stay a little crunchy and the oats are creamy perfection.
See what chef K has to say about his easy apple and oats recipe.
I was making breakfast. So I decided to make apple oatmeal. I got honey, apples, cinnamon, and oats. So I cut the apples. Then I mixed apples, oats, and cinnamon. I got honey with water and mixed it. Then I put it in with the apple stuff. I put it in a rice cooker. Then you wait a little bit. Then you have cereal. Then you add milk.

Real the Kitchen and Beyond: What kind of apples should we use in this recipe?
Chef K: Ginger Gold, but if you can’t find them, use any apple. It really depends how you like them – sweet or tart.
Real the Kitchen and Beyond: Why do you mix the honey and water before mixing it in the oats?
Chef K: It helps the honey dissolve and mix in evenly.
Real the Kitchen and Beyond: What setting did you use on the rice maker?
Chef K: I used the brown rice setting.
Real the Kitchen and Beyond: Do you have a favorite rice cooker?
Chef K: My mom bought an Aroma rice cooker on Amazon. She says it works pretty good. Unlike her, it doesn’t get distracted and burn the rice (or oatmeal).
Real the Kitchen and Beyond: What is your favorite topping for this apple oatmeal?
Chef K: Chocolate chips
Real the Kitchen and Beyond: Thank you for taking the time for this interview. We really enjoyed your delicious apple oatmeal.
