I don’t know about you but I HATE cleaning my microwave. I really do. It always seems like everything is so hard to get off. Plus they say not to spray cleaners in the microwave. You know, the ones that are supposed to get off tough messes? I have a super easy way to clean the microwave naturally!

Clean Microwave Naturally Step 1 - Real: The Kitchen and Beyond

How to Clean the Microwave in Easy Steps

  1. Fill a glass bowl half way with water
  2. Add lemon, orange or lime slices – I use citrus that is getting old, from glasses of water or iced tea, or baking
  3. Microwave for 4 minutes.
  4. Wipe down inside of microwave. If some stubborn spots remain, put bowl back in and microwave for 4 more minutes.
  5. After finished, pour water over microwave plate in sink and wipe down.
  6. Shine your sink with the lemon rinds.
  7. If you have a garbage disposal, run the lemon rinds through to give it a clean.

Honestly? IT’S THAT EASY!!! Plus it smells really nice.

To be even thriftier and (earth friendly) use a dish cloth or rag.

This is a post you want to pin AND try. It doesn’t get much easier or cheaper than this.

    1. I’m sorry it didn’t work for you. Did you follow all the steps as written? If you don’t put it in for enough time it doesn’t work as well and the citrus definitely is part of the cleaning process. I have done this exact process step-by-step many times and have had no issues with it not working. I also know many people who have tried it and loved how well it worked.

    2. Hey, it didn’t work for me with only 4 mins so I had to actually put the microwave on for 20 mins and it worked perfectly… I think it depends on how much water you have and the width of the container used which causes the times to vary.

      1. Hi. Thank you so much for taking time to give your feedback. May I ask how much water you used? I’d love to be able to update the post with helpful information. Having to heat the water in the microwave for 20 minutes is a little concerning to me. I worry that the water could “blow up” but also, it doesn’t seem energy or time efficient. I should have been more specific in my original instructions. I usually have 3-4 cups of water in the bowl and I find it works faster with the lemon (or lime) slices in it versus none.

    1. Also, if you have a garbage disposal you can clean it with the water and citrus from the microwave. I forget I use to do that when I had one.
