It’s time for back to school and we get a little tired of the same old same old peanut butter and jelly sandwiches so we are changing up lunchtime with these Jarlsberg Turkey Apple Melts. Easy enough for a kid to make, perfect for a mom’s taste. Depending on your kids’ ages you may have to do the very limited amount of cooking but it is so worth it when you take a bite into these healthy and delicious sandwich melts.

Since we homeschool we have the luxury of making a hot lunch during the day. If your kids can’t have a hot lunch you can make these sandwiches ahead of time then serve them cold and they will still be a nice change up to school lunch. Best of all these sandwiches are allergy friendly if your school is nut-free.

First we made our shopping list and bought the ingredients. Since we loved these pizza melts so much we decided to get pita for our sandwiches. Jarlsberg is available as minis, pre-packaged sliced cheese, freshly sliced at the deli, or in wedges. Availability depends on the store and we were able to find the minis and wedges everywhere but found the deli sliced at our local Shoprite. We love that we can buy Jarlsberg Cheese in so many ways for different uses.

We were able to find Jarlsberg at the sandwich counter and bought an off the bone turkey breast to pair with Jarlsberg because it is one of our favorite deli meats. Since my kids love spicy brown mustard just like I do we are adding a little bit to our melts but you can feel free to skip it.

Then, while the kids layer on the Jarlsberg, turkey, and apple slices, I heat the skillets. Yes, skillets. I put each pita into one skillet over a medium burner then add a second heated pan to the top. You could also use a panini maker but I don’t usually feel like pulling the panini press out.

Heat the pita sandwich for 2 minutes. Flip over and heat for 1-2 more minutes.

Educational Enrichment Tip: Cut in halves or fourths and serve. If you are making your Jarlsberg Turkey Apple Melts with kids this is a great time to refresh their minds on fractions or start teaching the little ones halves and quarters.

Enjoy your Jarlsberg Turkey Apple Melt

  1. Easy-peasy! Lunch is rarely a sit-down for me, so nutrition sometimes goes out the window. These are simple enough that I don’t have an excuse to not eat well and deliciously! Thank you!
