To me Walmart is nostalgia. I know, I know. It’s a big box store and some of you may hate me for that. Here’s the deal. I moved a lot in my life. Best friends? I had about 6-8 all together. Why? Because you move, you meet new people, and old friends move on without you. One constant for most of my life no matter where we lived was Walmart. Every town we lived near had a Walmart.
The first Walmart experience I truly remember, although I know we were there before that many times, was this one manager we got to know and the day it was pouring down rain and he greeted us with “Are you ducks? ‘Cause it’s a good day for ducks.” We thought he was silly and I remember he always had a smile for us.
We often lived in Smalltown, USA and even if there was nowhere else to buy clothes and other non-food essentials, there was Walmart. I had my ears pierced at there and bought my first jeans there. I remember being grateful to our local store that one winter when money was a bit tight for our family and they gave my dad, who worked night shift there as a second job to make ends meet, a big cart full of food, including the biggest turkey they had, for our Thanksgiving dinner.
This week there is a Walmart that was just renovated into a 24 hour Supercenter in Burlington, NJ and I was offered a chance to get in on day one for a tour. People, would I say no to that? NO! I have heard rumors that the new stores have some awesome products (not just clothes but food, home goods, and best of all, grilling and outdoor equipment) and I am so excited to put this one to the test and see what they have to offer that’s so much more than my childhood Walmart(s) memories.
That means there are going to be quite a few Walmart posts from me this week so let’s see how they can fit into my kind of food, frugal (but cute) fashion, and if they can wow this old time Walmart girl.
Follow along at #GOWalmart #2040 for the inside scoop and find them on Facebook. If you check out the new store make sure to send me a tweet or Instagram your finds with those hashtags and add me @HeatherLMcCurdy (Twitter) and @realthekitchenandbeyond (IG) so I don’t miss them. Here’s more information on the Grand Opening.
