May 1, 2014, and I am setting out on adventure. I did it. I signed up for the great pie adventure, aka Pie Party Potluck 2014, hosted by Ken and Jackie in the gorgeous GE Monogram Design Center. I spent 1 week figuring out what pie I wanted to make, and 2 weeks working on perfecting my pie. Making 4 Strawberry Rhubarb Goat’s Cheese Pies in 2 weeks is rather epic. I’m in shock that we aren’t sick of it yet.
Two days before THE BIG DAY I stalked the Pie Party page and wondered what I was thinking. There were astounding amounts of amazing-ness on that page. Yes, I know, amazing-ness isn’t a word but I’m making it one. How could I, little old home cook me, show up with my pie? Then I realized it wasn’t about the biggest and the best. It’s about bringing my best and enjoying time with people who love to do the same thing I do—living and breathing food.
So I did what I do best. I baked with my heart. I have been a fan of strawberry rhubarb ever since I was a little girl. We had a patch of it when we lived in the middle of nowhere, and that tart rhubarb flavor that tastes kind of yuck on its own is a beautiful thing when paired with sweet strawberries or juicy peaches. I also love goat’s cheese, so when that strawberry rhubarb goat’s cheese combination popped into my head I knew it would be magic – at least “Heather magic”, and it was. It is.
On May 1rst my pie and I set out. We drove like crazy people (and pie) to New Jersey to catch a train, then rode the train to NYC, hurried through Penn Station, were jostled around on a rush hour subway, and strolled 5th Avenue. Arriving at our destination, I was happy to see my pie (and I) had made it intact. That pie took a most prestigious journey. (Hello, what pie can say it walked 5th Avenue?) And now it’s been eaten.
Many thanks for #PiePartyGE
