Does your family love those adorable yellow minions as much as we do? Then we have a minion party that’s just right for you. Today I’m going to show you how to host a rocking homemade minion movie night party the kids will love.

Minions Movie Metalpak with exclusive content available at Target

Please be advised this minions movie night party is not only perfect for birthdays, but also works for sleepover parties or any time family movie nights. Don’t cringe at the homemade aspects of it. This non-crafty mama almost fell over at how easy each step was. In fact, I’m going to share each…and every…step with you.

Buy the Minions Movie

  1. Look for amazing displays with your favorite minions in the electronics department. Be prepared with a camera as you will likely want to hold an impromptu photo op. You will have several options but we highly recommend the MetalPak because the case is ADORABLE and will hold up much better than traditional DVD cases.
  2. Buy Minions © 2015 Universal Studios. All rights reserved. We couldn’t wait a day longer and bought the movie at Target on release day (12/8). While we were there we bought almost all our party products. (That pesky pineapple was hiding at the grocery store and the aprons and patches were at the craft store.)
  3. Random Fact: Did you notice the label on all the Minions licensed products? I was wondering what Illumination Entertainment is. It is the animation film production company that created the Despicable Me franchise and is a subsidiary of Universal Studios.
  4. Be prepared for non-stop giggles to come from your children with all parts of this hilarious movie.
  5. Need an excuse to buy? This minions movie night party OF COURSE… or Christmas. Buy now, give for Christmas, then hold a party during the last week of winter break. Hey, why not? 2 birds, 1 stone. Oh wait, 3 birds, 1 stone – gift, party, boredom buster.

A quick note: the MetalPak DVD/Blu-Ray combo and 40 minutes of exclusive content are available ONLY at Target.

MinionsMovieNight Display 2 at TargetMake Minion Aprons

There’s a myth floating around that dyeing things is difficult. Okay, so yeah, maybe that friend down the street totally LOOKED like a blueberry for a week. Or that mom at preschool killed her muscles stirring dye and clothes like a maniac for 30-60 minutes. You won’t. I promise. Not if you follow the directions for dyeing clothes in the washing machine. Just make sure you follow all steps so your every day whites don’t become minion yellow. The kids are going to L-O-V-E making their own minion aprons.

Supplies

  • White aprons (craft store)
  • Fabric dye (golden yellow-I used 3 boxes for 6 aprons)
  • Salt
  • White iron on clothing patches
  • Fabric markers-black, brown, and green

Pre-party Steps

  1. Dissolve dye in hot water if using powder, then add to hot water in the washing machine per the instructions on the label.
  2. Salt-loads of salt. No, really, 1 cup per box of dye. Who knew?! It helps the dye and fabric fall in love with each other.
  3. Follow the steps for dyeing on the box (or bottle of liquid dye). Make sure to follow the steps for rinsing the washer afterward.
  4. Dry beautiful minion colored aprons.
  5. Cut the white patches into circles. I used a drinking glass and traced on the back of the first patch with a fabric marker because it will wipe off easily. Then I used that as the guide for the rest of them.
  6. Iron the patches on per the instructions on the iron on label.

Party Steps

  1. Set each child up with a white eyed yellow apron.
  2. Explain that they are creating a minion eye and goggle.
  3. Oversee that they don’t get the marker on themselves (White trash bag aprons are perfect for this.)
  4. Try not to instruct too much. They may not end up with anatomically correct minion eyes but that’s okay. This is their work.

  4. When the batter is ready, set them up with the Minions movie while you bake the cupcakes.

Watch Minions Movie

We are die-hard Despicable Me and Minions fans who have been waiting foooooorever for this  movie to come out. Have I told you about that time we got caught in a rain shower because we “had to ride the Minions ride one more time”? Oh, we so should have known better but…one more ride…and Despicable Me Minion Mayhem was on our way back to collect our baggage from baggage check at 1:30 in the afternoon. We jumped into line and came back out 20 minutes later to a typical Florida torrential downpour that lasted 45 minutes.

Minions at Universal Studios
We met the minions and have proof! Blurry, but proof none-the-less.

Of course we slogged our way through the rain back to the resort because the water taxis were shut down for lightning.

Of course we had no room to change in because we were leaving.

Of course we had no extra clean clothes since I packed light.

Thankfully resort staff offered to let us change in the fitness center locker rooms and we emerged a bit later, still looking like drowned rats but in dry clothes. We are still so very grateful to them! And now, months later, it was finally the moment my kids have been waiting for. I set them up with the Minions movie then started meal prep. We paused the movie halfway through for food and a Banana Treasure Hunt.

Minions Movie Night Meal with

Pineapple Blueberry Freezer Pops

Keep the food simple. Oftentimes children don’t eat much at a party so keep that in mind. I chose to make pineapple blueberry freezer pops because they are healthy, fun, and yellow and “blue”. What better way to celebrate the Minions movie?!

Minions Movie Night MealSupplies

  • Bread
  • Chocolate
  • Peanut Butter
  • Bananas (optional – we skipped because too many didn’t care for bananas)
  • Veggies (carrots, celery, sweet peppers)
  • 1 pineapple, 1 cup blueberries (fresh or frozen), and 1 cup + 1 tablespoon Market Pantry Plain Yogurt for Pineapple Blueberry Freezer Pops

Pre-party Steps

Yield 12

Ingredients

  • 4 cups fresh cubed pineapple (approximately 2/3 whole pineapple)
  • 1 cup fresh or frozen blueberries (let frozen thaw a bit)
  • 1 cup plus 1 tablespoon Market Pantry plain yogurt

Instructions

  1. Blend pineapple and 1 cup yogurt.
  2. Put in freezer for about 30 minutes. You don’t want to leave them in too long or they will freeze too hard, but want them to set a bit before adding blueberries.
  3. Blend 1 cup blueberries with 1 tablespoon yogurt.
  4. Add to top of pineapple freezer pops.
  5. Freeze for several hours before serving.
  6. To get out of pop holders just run warm water over for a few seconds to loosen.

 Party Steps

  1. Make peanut butter and chocolate sandwiches. (Add banana slices if using).
  2. Cut veggies into sticks.
  3. Pull the freezer pops out just before serving lunch.

This fun game is optional if you have time to fill after the movie is over and cupcakes have been made.

Supplies

  • 2 pieces yellow construction paper
  • 1 piece blue construction paper
  • 1 piece black construction paper
  • 1 piece white construction paper
  • 1 piece brown or green construction paper
  • Clear contact paper
  • Scissors
  • Tape
  • Blindfold

Pre-party Steps

  1. Round edges on 1 end of each piece of yellow construction paper to shape a minion body.
  2. Tape the yellow pieces together on the back.
  3. Cut blue construction paper into shape of the lower half of minion body and cut approximately halfway down piece of paper, then cut out pieces for “arms”. I looked at a minion picture to get close.
  4. Glue to body.
  5. Cut back construction paper to width of minion head and cut a 4 inch piece.
  6. Trace a circle with a glass in the center of the paper.
  7. Cut 1 inch strips off the black construction paper on the top and bottom of either side to the edge of the glass shape and around the top and bottom circle sections.
  8. Glue to head.
  9. Lay minion carefully on the contact paper and cover both sides.
  10. Cut excess contact paper off.
  11. Using the glass from above, cut a circle of white construction paper, then trim about 1/2 inch off all around it.
  12. Make a smaller green or brown cirlcle and glue to the center of the eye.
  13. Using the scraps from the black construction paper, make a small circle for the center of the eyeball.
  14. Use the black marker to add a mouth.
  15. Cover the eye with contact paper.
  16. Add folded up tape to the back of the eye so it will stick when the children play.
  17. Tape the minion to a wall at a height the kids can reach.

Party Steps

  1. Have children take turns trying to “pin the eye” on the minion.

I know. I know. You already have enough to do for this party. You can totally buy your decorations in the party supply section at Target as the minions have descended. However, my daughter is so crafty and she loved the opportunity to make her own decorations. Plus she can show them off to friends who think it’s super cool that she did it herself.

We grabbed a pack of Up & Up construction paper in the craft section, then I searched minion coloring sheets, printed one off, and cut it out to create the stencils.

She forgot to cut the goggles out of black construction paper and add a few mouths but they still turned out super cute. She also used a blue freezer pop stick to apply the glue, which left the minions looking like they’d already eaten blue topped cupcakes. Didn’t she do a great job though?
