Yes, I am still alive. I admit I feel quite worn out but I am here. I thought the topic was perfect to address this time of year. I don’t know about you but I love making Christmas cookies – lots of Christmas cookies. It’s the only time of the year I go crazy on cookies.
Usually my mom and sisters and I get together and bake 8-12 kinds of cookies in one day. CRAZY!!! We narrow it down every year because it is insanely exhausting and seriously, by the time I am done baking them I am sick to my stomach just seeing all that sugar.
However, the one thing I do not like about baking Christmas cookies is the cost. It can really break your budget. I have a fix (Of course. Otherwise what’s the point of the post?)
STOCKPILE! Don’t buy your chocolate chips, peanut butter cups, Hershey’s kisses, etc. now while they are hyped up for the holiday. Buy them when they are on sale. I promise. They keep for a bit. I bought my peanut butter cups and Hershey’s Kisses at 75% off Halloween Clearance. Let me say, $1.25 each versus $3 is a much yummier cookie to swallow as long as you don’t try recycling Halloween candy from a year ago! That would be going a bit too far.
I also bought my chocolate chips when they were on sale, knowing I was going to need loads of them this time of year. Stock up on sugar and flour – buy 5 lb. here or there and then your budget won’t even notice it. You can also buy butter on sale and freeze it. I put mine in ziploc bags so it doesn’t get “freezer flavor” and pull it out as I need it. Note: cream cheese does NOT freeze and thaw well for baking or anything else. ICK!!!
I can’t wait to bring on the peanut butter blossoms, peanut butter cup brownies, snickerdoodles, ginger cookies, raisin tarts, chocolate chip cookies, meringue bites, and sugar cookies.
