This weekend we are celebrating cherries with Whole Foods Market. In case you missed yesterday’s recipe, check out these Chocolate Cherry Vanilla Ice Cream Sandwiches. Be prepared to drool on your computer screen. Today we’re going savory after an amazing canning demo with Marisa McClellan of Food in Jars. Marisa made a scrumptious sweet, savory, and tangy cherry chutney for us this evening and oh my wow!

A spoonful over soft sheep’s milk cheese and I was transported from a demo table to a romantic evening overlooking a river, where lights twinkle over gently moving water and birds coo softly in the trees, while a gentle breeze blows wisps of hair across my face.

If you don’t know Marisa and her amazing books, you are missing out. She takes the production out of canning and makes it easy. Would you like one jar or two? Did you know there is a magic number for safe canning? Many fruits have an acceptable Ph level but the magic Ph level to safely water bath can is 4.6. Under that? You’re golden. Over that? Add more acid or bring on the pressure canner.

Speaking of fruit, Whole Foods had cherries for $1.99 lb. yesterday only. If you missed it you still need to go buy some. They are the best cherries. Plumper and fruitier than any other cherry I have ever had – for real. I chose fruitier because meatier sounds weird when we’re talking fruit. Good fruit is so important for canning. It can make or break the best recipe.

tips for canning cherry chutney

I have found that home canned products taste so much better, and Marisa gave us the secret for that. It’s because everything is done by hand. I am going to say there’s a little more to the secret than that. It’s called a dose of love. Food is always better with love added into the mix. That’s almost always the secret ingredient to the best meals people ever eat.

We received gift bags with ingredients to make our very own batches of chutney at home and Whole Foods Market Devon gave me an extra bag to give away. Since cherries won’t travel so well I am including a gift card to go toward the purchase of cherries. Who’s going to be my lucky winner?

    1. You are welcome. Your box is going out in the mail tomorrow! I forgot to grab the gift card when I was in Whole Foods the last time so grabbed it on my way out of town for the weekend. Home and back to business tomorrow.

  1. I bought Rainier Cherries and ate so many raw that I didn’t have enough left to make anything. Getting more so I can put some up for later. Cherry season is too short.

  2. I love Bing Cherries! I can sit and just keep eating them, (have a problem with sharing them, lol)! I really can eat any kind of cherries. I make Cherries Delight for every holiday nd special occasion.

  3. That sounds heavenly! I just bought her book Preserving by the Pint and am dying to try canning for the first time. Love your blog and thank you for the chance to win!!

    1. Thank you. You will have to let me know what you try canning first. It’s rather addicting to have home canned jam and you will never want to buy another jar of it again.

  4. Straight out of the bag is my favorite way to eat cherries, but I’m looking forward to trying this recipe! Thanks for the great giveaway!

  5. I love to eat them out of hand best but if I have a lot such as I do now, I’ll preserve some in syrup to keep in the fridge and then freeze the rest.
