One of my favorite soft drinks is a Cherry Limeade. I’m not such a fan of the artificial flavors and dyes in the one I usually buy from a fast food restaurant. In fact, the last two times I bought cherry limeades I couldn’t even finish them. That “fake” flavor bothered me too much, and the syrupy sweetness was total overkill. Of course that means I need to create a new option.
I searched online for a quick and easy cherry limeade recipe but they all use 7up or Sprite. High Fructose Corn Syrup anyone? No thanks. I am still using sugar but on my own terms – less sugar and organic raw sugar. I have found the best way to incorporate sugar into fresh fruit drinks is to make a simple syrup. This also makes it easy to adjust the sweetness to your preferred taste. My kids will tell you I like my cherry limeade a little too tart for their taste. This makes it easy to add just a little more sugar to their drinks while keeping mine just the way I like it.
As a huge fan of making food and drinks from scratch with whole fresh ingredients I knew this was something I was ready to tackle, and sooner than later, before I cave to yet another syrupy drink I’m going to end up wasting. Since I just bought around 12 pounds of cherries from Whole Foods one day deal, I started pitting, juicing, and mixing. Oh my, the cherries! Hands down, Whole Foods has the best cherries. They are huge and juicier than any other cherries I have had this summer. These cherries are grown with plenty of space around them so they can grow nice and plump and juicy rather than being crowded in too small a space, which means less room to get so plump and ripe.
Cherry Limeade is so much better with fresh juicy cherries and freshly squeezed lime juice. Add a splash of seltzer, skip the maraschino cherries, and it’s a match made in heaven.
- ½ - ¾ cup simple syrup (add to taste)
- 1 cup fresh squeezed lime juice
- 3 cups water
- Mix all ingredients.
