Watermelon Smoothies

Our family loves watermelon, but my watermelon didn’t grow so I buy it at the store. Watermelon is good at any meal of the day, but this watermelon recipe is one of my favorite ways to start the day.

I was just a kid, but as a child in a family of gardeners, I knew that if I planted a watermelon seed it would grow. It would grow into this crazy big plant and watermelons would pop up off it and I would be so proud of my beautiful watermelons.

But here’s the thing, I wasn’t allowed to plant a watermelon because they do take up so much space and in a large family, garden space is prime real estate.

Imagine my excitement when a watermelon seed in the compost pile GREW. That plant grew into a big sprawling watermelon plant and I claimed it as my own. I waited all summer but no watermelon grew on it, and I always remembered that. I never tried to grow a watermelon again.

In hindsight, as an adult, I realize that I would likely have gotten better results if I had actually planted several watermelon seeds in a good growing environment, but that memory always stuck with me – my watermelon didn’t grow.

For now I am in a place that doesn’t have a good growing environment for watermelons, but someday I will have that plot of earth, and one spot of my prime real estate will be designated just for watermelons, because I need to prove to my childhood self that I can indeed grow watermelons that can be turned into the best watermelon recipes on the planet.

For just a few more years I will keep buying my watermelons at the store and make yummy watermelon recipes from them, like this tasty and gorgeous watermelon smoothie.

Watermelon smoothies are super simple and require only 2 ingredients. Not only do they offer a perfect way to hydrate kids, but they also look fancy for Sunday brunch.

#VisitPhilly: Philadelphia History and FARMiCiA

Several weeks ago my family went on a field trip, family style. That’s what homeschoolers do, or so I am told. I love that we live so close to Philadelphia, the place where so many important moments in history occurred, and may I add, so many fantastic restaurants to try. There are so many things to do in Philadelphia for kids and adults.

Quick Tip: Park at The National Constitution Center for an easy walk to all the historical sites.

#SharetheBuzz, Have Some Honey

I love honey, oh let me count the ways. I shared several facts about my love of honey on Facebook the other day. (Link at bottom of post.) I love honey, and I love those pesky little dandelions out in the yard because they help provide food for the bees that give us honey.

Blueberry Honey Lemonade

The summer air was hot yet clear. Even the coconut tree leaves were still. It was the kind of air that made you breathe deep and want to nap. And there was freshly squeezed lemonade – 6 freshly picked lemons, 1 cup sugar, 4 cups water, and ice.
