Highlighting Superfresh

Well, my morning started by just barely missing a police checkpoint.  Whew!!! Ok, so I wasn’t doing anything wrong but still I hate those things AND they really slow down traffic.  They must have set up shortly after we dropped Dave off at work. Then, we shopped Giant. We are not even going into what a nightmare that was this morning. We are skipping right to Superfresh.

Too Many Deals, Too Little Space!!!

Ugh!!! So, my freezers are FULL!!! Like, really full!!  But it was so fun getting the $25 off at Giant for buying $100 worth of frozen food, that I want to do it again.
What? Oh, OF COURSE NOT!!!! Did you think I REALLY spent $100?? No way. That was BEFORE coupons, and you all KNOW I use those babies.

This leads to today’s adventure. Like deep cleaning my bathroom, and making pasta,  scones and tomato sauce weren’t enough, I am cleaning out my fridge freezer.

Oh boy!!! It is always so full I never do that. Not good!! I finally got to the bottom and of course there are all sorts of unique things accumulating in there. Thankfully the boiling water trick my mom always used works like a charm at pulling all that gunk up. I don’t look forward to moving to the basement freezer.

Any creative uses for guacamole besides the traditional Mexican dishes? I was thinking of putting some in  a veggie soup. Is that too desperate? I mean, really, we rarely use guacamole BUT it was $1 at the grocery a few months back and I just so happened to have a few $1/1 coupons. IT WAS FREE!!!! I figured it would be great for fajitas and things like that. I just never got around to using it. Thankfully I was smart enough to pop it in the freezer right away.  Regretfully I wasn’t smart enough to REMEMBER I put it in the freezer until now.

This adventure also led to a pan of frozen chicken broth and spinach melting on low, and another pan of ground chicken getting browned with onions and garlic. Plus, I have a chicken breast, chicken sausages and ricotta mixture thawing.

Three meals – chicken sausage and spinach soup, ground chicken and brown rice soup, and chicken and ricotta stuffed pasta

What does this have to do with deals besides wanting to get more frozen food? A LOT!!!!! Here’s the breakdown on those meals:
*Ground chicken – $1.47# – Total: $2.03
*Spinach – less than .50 with a coupon
*Chicken sausage – 2.49# – Total: 1.82
*Chicken breast – 1.79#
*Ricotta – 32 oz. was 1.99, used a .75/1 coupon that doubled, so .24!!!! I used part and froze part
*Turkey broth – FREE. I roasted a turkey and froze a lot of broth
*Pasta – for my soup. I made it up when I got eggs for .99 a dozen so it cost pennies to make and freeze
*Broccoli – fresh steamed in the bag – $1

All of this was in my freezer because I bought it when there was a deal.  I also have carrots, onions, etc. for the soups, in my cellar or fridge. I paid under $10 for it where as if I went out today to buy those for meals this week I would have paid MUCH more.

Remember this though, it’s only a deal if you will use it.  If you get a good deal on 85% lean hamburger but don’t cook with 85% then it’s not a good deal. Odds are it will sit in your freezer until it isn’t recognizable and you chuck it.

I am off to make the kids some lunch – that frozen pack of hot dogs, frozen applesauce, and bag of peas is going to free up some much needed space.
